There are only 5 boards (assemblies) in the HP 5971 and HP 5972 MSD. Over the next few blog entries we will assist you in troubleshooting each of these modules.
DC Power supply
The DC power supply of the HP 5971 and HP 5972 Mass Spectrometer is a "store bought" power supply, not made by HP or Agilent. The DC power supply is stuffed under the manifold, behind the electronics chassis where main board and I/O board are mounted. This unit is essential. Without the conversion of the AC Line voltage to DC volts, none of the other boards will work and none of the functions of the MSD will occur.
There are two styles, the "old style" and the "new style". The old style are identified by screw terminals, the new style is identified by a plug in connector.
Most common failure of the Agilent Mass Spec is with the DC Power Supply.
Troubleshoot the DC power supply by reading the 110v or 220v input at the power supply and by reading the +5, +15, -15, and +26 volt test points at the main board. Find the test points at the lower right hand corner of the main board.
Repair of the power supply is not possible. Replacement is the only way to go. There are many sources of "used" power supplies out there - do not be fooled. Each of them is 10-15 year old. Just like yours. Get a new one.
The old style DC power supplies must be converted (new cables and mounting) to the new style. New style power supplies can be directly replaced with a brand new working unit.
